REPORT: Milan went after Ventura before hiring Inzaghi

With Giampiero Ventura’s Torino achieving consistent success since the former Bari gaffer took over the club in 2011, is it time for Il Maestro di Calcio (as tonight’s opponent, Sinisa Mihajlovic, calls him) to move to a big club?

According to a Gazzetta dello Sport report, Adriano Galliani already thought this was the case… last year, when Milan were looking for someone to replace Clarence Seedorf.

Before opting for Filippo Inzaghi, Milan’s vice-president had spoken with Ventura, though top brass at via Aldo Rossi wasn’t so sure.

To further put a spoke in Galliani’s wheels, Torino owner Urbano Chiaro promised Giampiero Ventura carte blanche in the transfer window.

Tonight, the Maestro has a unique chance to put one over a club that didn’t believe in him.

Milan, for their part, may well get a double case of buyers' regret, as both Filippo Inzaghi and current coach Sinisa Mihajlovic have flattered to deceive.

Despite Ventura's reputation as a "provincial" coach, the Rossoneri may even begin to wonder what could have been. It isn’t every day that you see a club assemble the likes of Daniele Baselli, Fabio Quagliarella, Marco Benassi, Bruno Peres, Kamil Glik and Nikola Maksimovic under one roof, or indeed get them to play the kind of football the Granata are producing week in, week out.
