Brussels Attacks: UEFA VP Giancarlo Abete reveals EURO 2016 could be played behind closed doors
“Security issues have a priority for all of us, the sport event has secondary importance", the former Italy FA president told Radio 24.
Security authorities are responsible for public order, they do not have the same responsibilities of the event’s organizers.”
“We need to wait for the decisions of those who are in charge of public safety. The last two world cups played in Brazil and South Africa were characterized by the risk of incidents related to social tensions.”
“There is a risk of playing EURO 2016 behind closed doors because it is a competition that has to be played. No games can be postponed to another date.”
“Those events [the Paris and Brussels attacks] have already had a negative impact on the tournament. There is an increasing risk perception and less enthusiasm.”
“The tournament is scheduled for June, but the emergency is going on right now. Italy will play against Belgium in the group stage, so everyone will need to do his job.”
