What does Italy's squad for Euro 2016 look like? No Pirlo, No Insigne?
Today marks a particular day: only 100 days are left until Euro 2016 kicks off... a prospect Azzurri fans are hardly looking forward to. The Corriere dello Sport decided to tally things up and see what is likely on Coach Antonio Conte's mind.
Things are at least looking ok in goal, though some may entertain doubts about Salvatore Sirigu being Gianluigi Buffon's Number 2, especially with Mattia Perin as the number three and Marco Sportiello as the fourth choice. Daniele Padelli (huh?) is the fifth option, whilst Milan star Gianluigi Donnarumma is still with Italy's youth setup.
Things look reasonable in defence, with Davide Astori and Francesco Acertbi fighting for a spot in the middle, and three Milanisti (Luca Antonelli, Mattia De Sciglio and Ignazio Abate) in the hunt, as well as Lorenzo De Silvestri of Sampdoria.
Emanuele Giaccherini will be the new man (so to speak) in midfield, he's playing very well, along with Giacomo Bonaventura and Riccardo Montolivo. The surprise... could be Stefano Sturaro, of Juve!
In attack, on the other hand, the Azzurri should take Graziano Pellè, Antonio Candreva, Eder ed the reborn Stefano El Shaarawy, with Simone Zaza trailing tha pack. The feeling is that Federico Bernardeschi, Lorenzo Insigne, Domenico Berardi, Ciro Immobile, Mattia Destro, Stefano Okaka and Sebastian Giovinco are all fighting for the last spot.
Mario Balotelli, on the other hand... looks to be completely out of contention. The Azzurri will play Spain in Udine on March 24th and Germany in Munich on the 29th.
Here is the predicted squad in full:
