Montella: "Mati wanted to come to Milan. I listened to the advice of Berlusconi"
As he prepares to face Bournemouth in a friendly encounter today, Milan coach Vincenzo Montella has been speaking to Premium Sport. He began by stating that; “I’m really satisfied with the way things are going, there are points where we need to improve but the foundations are in place. It will take time to achieve perfection. There are bigger expectations at Milan from previous clubs I have managed but this is why I took the job in the first place”.
ON THE CASE OF MATI FERNANDEZ:
“With Mati I have a great relationship and I’m not going to deny that called him. He wanted to come to Milan and that’s the reason I contacted him. As soon as I realised his desire we concluded the deal.
DIFFICULT DEBUT:
The last game left me feeling very bitter but despite our defeat in Naples, I saw some positive things and areas that we must improve, especially in view of the goals we conceded. However, the desire to work and give satisfaction to our fans is great”.
ON BERLUSCONI:
“He is truly passionate and he transmits the desire to win through his words. He calls me often; the last time was before the game against Napoli. He gave me some precious advice and I always like to listen”
ON PLAYER RATINGS:
I would like to print the pages of the newspapers in relation to our new signings. I believe this group is worth much more than what the press thinks. We were restricted by the budget available and this must be taken into account”.
INTER BEHIND MILAN:
My advice to Frank de Boer? Well I hope he remains behind Milan! He has demonstrated to be a very intelligent coach and someone who is well prepared. My advice would be to listen to someone of the stature of Javier Zanetti”.
OBJECTIVE EUROPE:
“We must improve. Our aspiration must be to return to Europe at least through the Europa League. It will not be easy because our rivals such as Juventus, Roma, Napoli and Inter have all strengthened but we should concentrate on our own future”
