FOCUS How Spalletti could use three-man defence to rescue Roma, Peres... and De Rossi
The 4-2-3-1 they use is the right formation if it is interpreted well… but new signing Bruno Peres (who will cost €17 million next summer as part of his compulsory buyout) has been awful in defence, whilst attacking with gusto. The penalty he gave away against the Granata is proof of the defence’s struggles, with the likes of Kostas Manolas always left to their own devices and Alessandro Florenzi still being used at right-back.
Forced into a corner, Coach Luciano Spalletti could find a solution in a three-man defence. This would allow Kostas Manolas and Juan Jesus to be assisted by a third player, and provide cover for the wing-backs. This could not only resurrect Daniele De Rossi’s career, but also help Roma overcome Miralem Pjanic’s departure, with Radja Nainggolan and Kevin Strootman flourishing in the middle.
Roma have the ingredients. Now all they need is to find the right recipe.
