SERIE A’s REFS, Rated: Why FIFA are to blame for Pjanic’s disallowed goal | Matchday 9 Edition
Let’s update our Refereeing Column, shall we?
It’s been a very messy week for referees, with Juventus’ much-recriminated disallowed goal nowhere near enough to send the official in question to the bottom of our ratings.
No, it’s Doveri of Atalanta - Inter who takes the cake, missing Gary Medel’s elbow in Jasmin Kurtic’s face, which would have been enough to get him sent off. The free-kick Eder buried for the momentary leveller wasn’t the correct call, either, Konko having actually dispossessed the Brazilian. Atalanta’s penalty was, on the other hand, clear as day.
Milan-Juventus
Pjanic’s goal should ahve been allowed. Linesman Cariolato made the wrong call, as goal-mouth ref Massa’s angle was such that he’d have believed Benatia and Bonucci to both be active. It wasn’t an easy call to get right: Cariolato would have had to remember a lot in very little time, this has more to do with FIFA’’s frantic demands than with the refereeing.
Torino-Lazio
Giacomelli should have handed Parolo his second yellow for the foul he committed on Torino’s penalty, which in itself was questionable, as it is hard to judge how Parolo moved his arm.
