    Ref Review: Matchday 12

    • Massimo Chiesa, translated by Edo Dalmonte @edodalmonte
Welcome to Ref Review, our weekly diagnostic of Italy’s men in black. Beyond analysing the week’s three biggest mistakes, we also mark every referee, see who is moving up the power rankings and - if there are any - point out any good calls.

    The Three Biggest Blunders

1 and 2 Paolo Tagliavento, Roma- Lazio
Tagliavento was terrible in the derby. Santiago Gentiletti’s foul on Edin Dzeko occurred outside the box, the referee should have given Roma a free kick, not a penalty.
It’s true that things happened very quickly, but there were three referees in the area (the linesman and the goal line referee), someone should have seen it.
And to think that that wasn’t Tagliavento’s biggest mistake: he should have shown Sehad Lulic a straight red for that horrific foul on Mohamed Salah. Instead, he didn’t even give the foul!

    3 Davide Massa, Empoli-Juventus
Dybala’s goal (3-1) was abetted by Stefan Lichtsteiner’s blatant offside position.

WHO IS UP: Celi, Calvarese, Mariani.
WHO IS DOWN: Tagliavanto, Massa, Russo.

This week’s marks (check out our index below)
    Verona-Bologna: Orsato 6
Milan-Atalanta: Giacomelli 5,5  - Should have sent off one player from each side. De Sciglio should have seen a second yellow for his foul on Pinilla, which is why the full-back was replaced by Calabria. Pinilla himself should have been shown a straight red for his ugly lunge on Niang.
    Torino-Inter: Irrati 6
    Empoli-Juventus: Massa 5
Frosinone-Genoa: Calvarese 6 – Correctly sent De Maio off.
    Palermo-Chievo: Mariani 6
    Roma-Lazio: Tagliavento 4
Sassuolo-Carpi: Valeri 6 – Then again, nine yellow cards seem a bit excessive.
    Napoli-Udinese: Celi 6,5
Sampdoria-Fiorentina: Russo 5,5 Vecino should have been sent off for hand-ball, he was already on a yellow.

A brief guide to Italian-style marking:

0-3,5: God-Awful, sent off or did something unforgivably bad (and then some). The Gresko Zone.
4-4.5: Terrible. Probably responsible for conceding multiple goals, or just totally absent from the game. Stephen Appiah on a bad day.
    5: Bad.
5.5: Average, not a good impact, likely a messy performance, things to improve. Stephen Appiah on a good day.
6: Sufficient, a job done (just about). Pirlo if he does the bare minimum.
    6.5: Good
    7: Very Good
    7.5: Wonderful!
8-10: God-like. Ronaldo (Luis Nazario, that is) used to get marks like this. The hat-trick zone.
