OPINION: Why Gonzalo Higuain is better than Luis Suarez

Gonzalo Higuain made history yesterday night at the San Paolo. The Argentinean striker netted a hat-trick against the already relegated Frosinone, breaking Gunnar Nordhal’s 35 goals record in a single Serie A campaign.

Gonzalo Higuain netted in 25 different games this season, scoring only one hat-trick (yesterday against the cicociari) and nine braces. What does it mean? Simple, Higuain has been incredibly consistent this season and has not built his record only scoring against small clubs. Nordahl played two more games than Higuain (37 vs 35), but scored in 22 different games rather than 25.

This makes a lot of difference and that’s why we believe Gonzalo Higuain’s goals are more important than Luis Suarez’s 40, who, however, will be awarded with this year’s golden boot.

The Uruguay International is an absolute top-class striker, but – talking respectfully to Napoli – Barcelona’s players are from another world. Suarez could benefit from the assists of the likes of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Neymar, which makes a striker’s life much easier.

Suarez scored four goals more than Higuain, but entered the scoring sheet in 22 games rather than 25, just like Nordahl. In terms of team’s results, Higuain had more impact than Suarez. We know that La Liga giants Barça and Real usually immerse in goals struggling teams: Suarez netted four goals in a single game twice, he netted four hat-tricks (20 goals in six games) and scored four braces, netting one goal in 12 games.
