AC Milan went on a spending spree during this summer, splashing out €86 million on players to help new Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic make Milan great again.

Instead, the Rossoneri languish in eleventh place, having secured only nine points.
One week after Inter were embarrassed to the tune of four goals at home, the same happened to their Milanisti cousins, Napoli coming away with a sound 4-0 thrashing which has sent shockwaves through the Italian football world.

The Diavoli faithful are furious, not to mention owner Silvio Berlusconi, who will be inviting Mihajlovic over to Arcore for what can be assumed will be a stern talking to. Having raked in €25 from player sales, Milan spent €30 million alone on Carlos Bacca, €25 million on Alessio Romagnoli, €20 million on Andrea Bertolacci, €8 million on Luiz Adriano, €3 million on Juraj Kucka, whilst adding Balotelli on loan from Liverpool and welcoming back Rodrigo Ely from Avellino.

Though some of these signings have raised questions, Bacca looks to be well worth the investment, whilst Luiz Adriano is taking time to adjust to life in Serie A, with €8 million arguably a very good price indeed for a potential 10-15 goal contributor with ample Champions League experience.

But therein lies the problem: having spent all this money, Milan actually look worse than Pippo Inzaghi’s side from last season, bringing in five points less than the 2014-2015 team.

To compound thing, the Rossoneri are 14th in Serie A for shots taken (worse than Carpi and Frosinone), 17th for shots on goal and 13th in total distance covered.

A consolation is that Juventus have paid a whopping €15 million per point, though Milan don’t come off too well when compared to bargain busters Fiorentina and Lazio (less than €1 million), Napoli (just under €3). Even teams in search of an identity like Roma and Inter are coasting (comparatively speaking) at €5,67 and €6.26.

The kicker? The only other Berlusconi side to concede 13 goals in its first seven Serie A outings (and he’s been president for a while) was… Massimo Allegri’s Milan of two years ago. No prizes for guessing whether he finished out the season. And even his charges didn’t have a -5 goal difference.

The crows are circling around Mihajlovic. His team needs to turn it around soon.
