Italian Ultras are out of control: a report by Pippo Russo
According to the Association of Italian footballers (AIC), 117 separate cases of violence or intimidation were carried out on players last season, 55% of which regarded professionals.
61% of cases occurred outside stadiums, up from 57% the previous season.
The South seems to be a particular hotbed, responsible for 52% of the incidents, though Lazio (the region where Rome is situated) tops the charts with 17%.
Even more disconcertingly, 23% of these cases eventually resulted in physical violence, 55% of which regarded fans attacking their own team.
68% of the intimidatory incidents were addressed at teams as a whole, 32% individuals.
