Each week, calciomercato.com releases an updated shortlist featuring the 10 best football players  in Europe’s top leagues

At the top of the table, we find Premier League top-scorer Jamie Vardy, who stays ahead of the field by netting a brace against Southampton.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas is just behind Leicester’s front-man. The Costa Rican kept a clean sheet for the 6th time in 8 La Liga games. No-one in Real Madrid’s history has ever done this.

Former Chelsea man Lassana Diarra features in third place. Though Marseille are struggling in Ligue 1, the midfielder’s skills have stood out, allowing him to rise above the Phoceens current mediocrity.

There is a new entry among the chosen few: Napoli hitman Gonzalo Higuain. The Argentinean star is the second Serie A player to appear in the shortlist after Fiorentina’s Borja Valero, while the Bundesliga has lost one player due to Douglas Costa’s exit.

Bringing up the rear of the list, you might have noticed that there are no defenders. This confirms how playing as a full back could be a role of diminishing importance, especially in recent times. By contrast, the presence of a top European club goalkeeper such as Keylor Navas comes as a huge surprise.

You would think that the Costa Rican is getting praise and credit at the Santiago Bernabeu due to his amazing saves: in reality, he hasn't been too busy thus far.
