EXCLUSIVE What are Roma to do with Gerson?
Merely a year ago, the Lupa had snagged the 19-year-old for 16.6 million (plus bonuses) in order to beat out Barcelona and Juventus for him. Key to all this was Roma’s promise to pay off Barcelona, offering a percentage were he to win the Ballon D’Or as a Giallorosso.
Now that Luciano Spalletti claims that Gerson ‘struggles as a playmaker’, Roma have a big problem: despite being a star at Fluminense and being allowed to settle in Rome since January, the Brazilian hasn’t done much, and showed issues from a defensive point of view, seeing as he’d only played on the wing or behind the strikers back at Flu.
Though director of Sport Walter Sabatini (who signed Gerson) still believes a lot in him, the fact that he is not doing well defensively or as a box-to-box player isn’t good.
With Empoli already considering using him on loan, could the Roma star be set to leave the capital?
