EXCLUSIVE: Empoli’s DS Carli in pole position to replace Walter Sabatini at AS Roma

Empoli Sporting Director  Marcello Carli is in pole position to replace Walter Sabatini at AS Roma, sources exclusively told calciomercato.com.

Sabatini revealed yesterday he’s going to hand his resignation at the end of the current campaign. The reason behind Sabatini’s decision is the relationship with president James Pallotta which has quickly deteriorated after the sacking of Rudi Garcia.

Pallotta believes Sabatini should have fired the French tactician earlier, while the Director of Sport has not appreciated the constant presence of the president’s right hand man Alex Zecca during all the recent transfer meetings.

AS CM.com’s Daniele Longo reports, Carli could be the perfect replacement for Sabatini, so much so the Giallorossi have already sounded out Carli’s availability to swap the Castellani with the Olimpico.
The Tuscan’s director is not the only name Pallotta has shortlisted. Former Parma Andrea Berta would be the club’s number one choice, but it’ll be very difficult to convince him leaving Atletico Madrid, the club he’s currently working for.

Former AS Roma player Federico Balzaretti is also a plausible option. Balzaretti would work in partnership with Pietro Lo Monaco (ex Catania), but his inexperience could convince Roma, he’s not the right person to pick up the baton of Sabatini.

One last name is Filippo Fusco, a former middle-man who’s on very good terms with Sabatini himself.
AS Roma’s Sporting Director casting has just begun and Carli seems to be in pole position to replace Walter Sabatini.
