England: Wenger still wanted to replace Allardyce

Following the shock dismissal of Sam Allardyce as manager of the England national football team, the Telegraph reports that current Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is one of the names linked to the vacancy. The 66-year-old has just celebrated his 20th year in charge of the Gunners and his name has been mentioned many times in conjunction with what is considered one of the hardest jobs in football.

Arsenal chief Stan Kroenke was in England last weekend and hopes to be able to convince Wenger to extend his current deal at the Emirates which expires at the end of the season. He was also the Football Associations first-choice to replace Roy Hodgson after Euro 2016 but once again, he declined the offer stating that he wanted to remain loyal to his club side going into that final year of his existing deal.

Under 21 coach Gareth Southgate has been placed in charge for the next four matches until a successor can be found to Allardyce who lasted just 67 days in the job and oversaw just the one match in charge; a 1-0 away win in Slovakia earlier this month.
