Corvino: 'I'm not going to sign Jovetic just to do someone a favour'
“I’ve always been coherent” Pantaleo Corvino told journalists in today’s press conference, “I had to achieve certain objectives whilst considering that we’ve made losses of 40 million over the last two seasons”.
“And I’m doing this whilst attempting to keep our best players, so as to ensure that Fiorentina is competitive. I had to get rid of our financial and technical “anchor”, as it were. And we had to respect Financial Fair Play”.
With Fiorentina bringing in few players in the current transfer window and selling Marcos Alonso to Chelsea, Corvino also had to answer about his rumoured courtship of Stefan Jovetic, and was surprisingly frank:
“We weren’t ready to sell Alonso, but the offer was one we couldn’t refuse. Those who called us about Sportiello were told that we don’t consider players who are offered to us.
“Jovetic? I don’t do things to make a big splash, I don’t take people for a ride, and I wouldn’t sign Jovetic just to do someone a favour. If I’m in the black and I can do it, I will. If not, however, I say with great humility and honest that we’ll try to get as few things wrong as possible”.
Quizzed about his relationship with Coach Paulo Sousa, who was rumoured to have tried to force an exit from the Viola, Corvino denied everything.
“I’ve told you and the fans, and I’ve said it to Sousa as well. We’ve gone down this road together.
“As someone who is down there on the pitch it makes sense that he would have wanted more, but we agreed on these guidelines.
“When I told him we were signing [Maximiliano] Olivera to replace [Marcos] Alonso, he told me that he trusted me”.
