Champions League appearances: Buffon to overtake three European legends

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is set to register his 108th appearance in Champions League tonight, overtaking European legends Oliver Kahn, Luis Figo and Frank Lampard and becoming the 25th player with the most appearances in Europe’s elite competition.

Buffon, 38, played his first Champions League game in September 1997, when he was still playing for Parma. His first appearances came in a game against Sparta Prague.

Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas is the player with the most appearances in Champions League, having registered 163 in his career. Barcelona legend Xavi and Manchester United former star Ryan Giggs sit second and third with 157 and 151 Champions League appearances respectively.

Paolo Maldini is the Italian player with the most games played in Champions League with 139 games, the former AC Milan defender sits 5th in this special ranking.
