Behind the scenes: What led to Pioli’s appointment as Inter coach

Stefano Pioli made debut on Inter’s bench last week managing a 2-2 draw against hatred city rivals AC Milan in the first Milan derby of his career. The Italian tactician is the third manager in charge of Inter in the last three months and our reporter Emanuele Tramacere has exclusively learned the reasons why the Meazza outfit decided to appoint Pioli as their now boss to replace Frank De Boer.

Pioli was initially sounded out by the ‘Italian’ side of the control room (Ausilio, Gardini and Zanetti) who informed the Italian manager that Suning’s green light would have been the key to his appointment. Pioli met Suning a few days later, leaving the representatives of the Chinese company impressed.

Pioli’s Serie A experience and his good relationship with the Italian press are the main reasons that led to his appointment. Suning also informed their new manager that no big investment will be made in the January transfer window as the club’s priority is to sell some of their outcasts in order to free up cash and follow the guidelines of FFP rules.

Pioli accepted Suning’s conditions even if he’s pushing to sign Lazio playmaker Lucas Biglia, one of his favourite players.

After the draw in the Milan derby, Inter will be facing Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Europa League tonight before Fiorentina, Napoli, Genoa, Sassuolo and Lazio in Serie A.
