WORLD CUP 2018 QUALIFYING: Gabriel Jesus inspires Brazil, Bacca misses penalty & Dybala sees red on debut
South America’s World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign continues and there was a surprise last night as Paraguay beat Chile 2-1. Romero and Silva gave the hosts a two goal lead in the opening 10 minutes before Arturo Vidal halved the deficit eight minutes before the interval.
Brazil left it late against Ecuador but three goals in the final 20 minutes saw the Selecao eventually run out emphatic winners. Neymar got things off and running from the penalty spot on 72 minutes before a brace from Gabriel Jesus on 87 and 92 minutes respectively, put some added gloss on their victory. Colombia beat Venezuela 2-0 thanks to goals from James Rodriguez and Macnelly Torres with Milan’s Carlos Bacca missing a penalty.
A Lionel Mess goal two minutes before half-time was enough to give Argentina the win over Uruguay in Mendoza despite Juve striker Paulo Dybala being sent-off and leaving the field in tears. Bolivia completed the night’s action with a 2-0 win over Peru.
THE STANDINGS: Argentina 14; Uruguay, Colombia & Ecuador 13; Brasile & Paraguay 12; Chile 10; Bolivia 6; Perù; Venezuela 1.
