Top-class defender close to joining Man Utd as Benfica president lands in England

Benfica defender Victor Lindelof is close to joining Manchester United or, at least, that’s what Portuguese paper O Jogo reports. The rock solid centre back is a top transfer target of José Mourinho who is desperate to sign some defence reinforcement for the incoming transfer campaign as Eric Bailly has picked up a knee injury and is set to join Cote d’Ivoire next month to play the African cup of nations.

Lindelof is a transfer target of both Inter and Juventus but neither Serie A clubs are going to make an official bid in the incoming transfer window. Juventus have signed promising Italian defender Mattia Caldara and Inter need to stick with FFP rules and can spend no money to sign new players in January.

O Jogo claim that Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira is going to land in England today to meet representatives of Manchester United and finalize the transfer of the 22-year-old centre-back. The Sun adds that super-agent Jorge Mendes will also be in Manchester to negotiate Lindelof’s transfer.

According to the English and Portuguese papers, Lindelof will move to Manchester United for € 45 million plus € 5 million in add-ons, although Lindelof is said to have a € 30 million release clause included in his contract with the Portuguese club.
