Stat attack: looking for the real El Shaarawy

His backheel goal in the debut game against Frosinone last season made all AS Roma fans fall in love with ‘the Pharaoh’, Stephan El Shaarawy.

The former AC Milan star netted eight goals in 16 games with the giallorossi last season convincing the club’s board to invest € 13 million to make his switch permanent at the beginning of last summer.

In the 2016-17 campaign, however, El Shaarawy has failed to impress, at least until now. The early Champions League elimination could have had a negative impact on the talented winger who is still without a goal in five seasonal appearances.

His only noticeable action so far was being fouled by Mauricio Isla in the matchday two to earn a deserved penalty kick in an away game against Cagliari.

After being sidelined for all EURO 2016, also new Italy national team coach Giampiero Ventura has closed Coverciano’s gates for him claiming that attacking wingers will get no call-ups to national team until he uses the 3-5-2 system.

Spalletti, however, could give ElSha a chance to shine on Wednesday night in a midweek Serie A clash against Crotone. The Italian tactician has to rotate his best players as the giallorossi will be playing four games in the next two weeks, The Pharaoh has now to justify his € 13 million price-tag. It’s time to show who the real El Shaarawhy is.
