Sarri: ‘Napoli affected by Benfica’s draw’

Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri talked to media after their side’s disappointing 0-0 draw against Dynamo Kyiv in Champions League.

The Italian tactician blamed the squad’s approach to the game claiming that Besiktas’ late score against Benfica had a big influence on his side. Benfica and Besiktas had met ahead of the kick off of Napoli-Dynamo and the Turkish side recovered from three goals down, getting back in the race for the knock out stage.

Napoli and Benfica share the top spot of the group now, with Besiktas one point behind them. Napoli are going to travel to Portugal in two weeks time in the final game of the group stage.

“When the guys started the pre-match warm up Benifca were 3-1 up, when they entered the pitch Besiktas had just scored the 3-3. They knew a draw or a win would have made no difference and their results influenced us in the end", Sarri told Premium Sport

“That should never happen, but that’s how the man’s mind works. I hope this result is not going to lead to other disappointing results and performances like last month. Dynamo, however, are a very compact and balanced team, we knew we could have wait until the last match to make it through the group stage.”
