Everton: Depay loan-deal the key to Rooney's return

He’s unable to play against his former club this afternoon due to suspension, but reports in the Sunday journals in the UK suggest that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will be making a quick return to Everton…in January.

Reports also suggest that the toffees are preparing an audacious double-swoop in the new year to land both the England captain and Dutch play-maker Memphis Depay. 30-year-old Rooney, who was a boyhood Everton fan, burst on to the scene at the club under former boss David Moyes. When he moved to Old Trafford in 2004, some of the clubs fans declared they would never forgive his actions but it’s looking likelier and likelier that they will be made to eat their words.

The Red Devils are believed to be reluctant to sell Rooney until the summer but this has failed to stop boss Ronald Koeman giving the green-light to club executives to bring the prodigal son back home.

A more likely proposition could be a January loan-move for Dutch outcast Memphis Depay. The 22-year-old has seen just 20 minutes of first-team action all season and it’s claimed that Koeman may request a short-term loan with the first refusal on Rooney in the summer.
