ROMANO: Witsel to join AC Milan unlikely

    • Fabrizio Romano translated by M.G.
First of all, to sell some of their players, then to sign a high-rated midfielder: these are AC Milan’s plans for the current transfer window. The rossoneri will try to reinforce a troubled team despite the difficulties of the transfer market. The main candidates to leave remain the 23-year-old forward Stephan El Shaarawy (tracked by AS Roma), the 31-year-old midfielder Nigel De Jong (whose agents are in talks with the Los Angeles Galaxy)and the 28-year-old winger Alessio Cerci (about to join Genoa); after selling such players, the Lombard club’s CEO Adriano Galliani will be able to swoop on a midfielder, but it won’t in any case be easy.

Zenit St. Petersburg 27-year-old Axel Witsel remains a target, but the Russian club is irritated by Milan’s attitude during the last transfer window, and to let the former Benfica man leave require €25 million cash. At such conditions, a transfer to San Siro seems almost impossible.

The alternative to Witsel is another Belgian - Manchester United 28-year-old Marouane Fellaini: the latter has been observed by Galliani himself for a long time, but even in this case, the transfer fee required is extremely high: €20 million.
