Arsene Wenger rejected chance to sign Luka Modric

Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has revealed in his autobiography called ‘It Shouldn’t Happen to a Manager’ why Arsene Wenger refused to sign Luka Madric for Arsenal when the Croat was under contract with Dynamo Zagreb, months before joining the Gunners’ hatred rivals Tottenham.

Modric used to play as left winger, but Redknapp was the first manager to move the Croatia International in the middle of the pitch despite not being physically imposing as the rest of modern centre midfielders, which is also the reason why Wenger turned down the chance to sign him.

“Wenger thought that Modric Modric was too lightweight to be a success in the Premier League and also some of my staff thought that he was not physically imposing enough to play in that area of the pitch.”

Modric, however, has imposed himself as one of the best centre midfielders in the football panorama. He spent four years at Tottenham before moving to Real Madrid in a € 30 million deal in 2012. The 31-year-old playmaker has won two Champions Leagues and one, two UEFA Supercups and two more Spanish domestic titles with the LaLiga giants.
