REPORT: Belgium's locker room in open rebellion

Belgium have been one of Euro 2016’s biggest disappointments, their exit -and schooling - at the hands of Wales the last nail in the coffin for a side that looked to have recovered after losing its opening game to Italy.

And yet, Het Laatste Nieuws (who have provided interesting scoops on the Belgian locker room before) claim that the seeds of Belgium’s downfall may have laid within their greatest triumph - their 4-0 demolition of Hungary.

The Flemish paper claims that, whilst the players were made to adhere to a strict regime, Wilmots and his staff celebrated the Round of 16 win with a booze-up, to the point that some of the Head Coach’s assistants “were barely able to stand up”.

There’s more: Wilmots’ decisions created a tense atmosphere in the locker room, and were often questioned by the players. The likes of Axel Witsel and Eden Hazard were often reassured of their place and given information on the lineup. Angry team-mates would reportedly get their own back by texting the press about lineup news.

The nadir, however, came after Belgium were skipped out of the tournament, when goalkeeper Thibault Courtois faced up to Coach Wilmots, and questioned the Coach’s management.
