De Gea’s protracted move to Real has threatened to overshadow the goalkeeper’s future during his most recent years at United, where he was recently voted as the fan’s Player of the Year for a third successive season. The Spaniard, who moved to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011, almost completed a deadline-day move to his former club’s bitter city rivals in summer 2015, only for complications to scupper the deal.
