OPINION: Marotta was right to snub Iturbe, Dybala's been a hit for Juventus!
The summer of 2014 was the setting for one of the biggest recent transfer sagas, that which eventually saw Juan Iturbe pack his bags and join Roma. Yet Juventus had been in the running for Iturbo: Coach Antonio Conte wanted him badly, and was also very keen on a certain Juan Cuadrado.
We all know what happened next: Conte resigned on July 15th (citing the club's lack of ambition as a factor), and the young Argentina joined Roma the very next day for €22 million, plus an additional €2.5 million's worth of bonuses and a €7 million chunk for his agent, who owned 30% of the rights to Iturbe. That's a healthy €31.5 million Walter Sabatini ended up paying.
How has that gone for Roma? Well, the winger has played 53 games, few from beginning to ending, scoring only 5 goals.
Juventus, for their part, waited a year before getting Paulo Dybala. He may have cost more, but his impact has been undeniable, contributing nine goals in 22 games. He may have cost more, but he's got a very bright future ahead of him.
Iturbe's... is in England.
