OP-ED Insigne should move to Spurs, Inter to realize his potential

“He’s Napoli’s very own Totti”. Antonio Ottaviano has no doubt: his client, Lorenzo Insigne, is the Partenopei’s talisman.

A statement which would have been accurate last season, when he scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists.

This time round, he’s struggling, being booed by the crowd, his tears the sign that he’s taking all of this very seriously, and that it’s weighing on him.

At age 25, Francesco Totti had already dragged Roma (traditionally a difficult place to play) to a Serie A title, and had the fanbase’s unquestioning loyalty. Insigne has already been booed at a player presentation, just before the start of the 2014-2015 pre-season. He’s got the technique all right, but not the personality to be a leader.

Could the rumoured move to Tottenham, Liverpool or Inter Milan actually do him some good? To leave the passionate city of Naples and develop somewhere where the vitriol is less personal?
