Morata equals Del Piero Champions League record
In the 90s, Alessandro Del Piero was able to produce this special record twice. The first time was when Juventus eventually won the Champions Leage final against Ajax. It was the 1995-1996 campaign, Del Piero was only 22 but he scored against Borussia Dortmund, Steaua (home and away), Rangers, and again Borussia Dortmund.
The following season Del Piero found the net of the goal in the Olympiapark's final lost to Borussia Dormund and then in the 1997-1998 campaign against Feyenoord, Manchester United and Kosice, both in the home and away leg.
Following Del Piero's path, Alvaro Morata started his record stripe in last season's Champions Leage campaign which ended piercingly for Juventus, as the Turin club lost the Berlin final against FC Barcelona.
Last season Morata scored in both semifinals against his former club Real Madrid as well as in the final against the Catalans. Before yesterday's goal Morata had already scored the winner against Manchester City in this seasons' Champions League opener, at the Etihad Stadium.
The Spaniard's record is also a clear message both to Juventus' board and supporters: Morata's role at Juve is becoming as important as the one of Del Piero back in the 90s. Morata's growth at the club has been permanent and unstoppable since he joined the Italian side on a € 22 milion deal from Real Madrid in 2014. It is not only a matter of scoring goals. It is also a matter of scoring awkward goals in the most important European competition for clubs. Morata has become an unexpected young leader at Juventus, thanks to a mix of physical power and outstanding tecnique skills. That's why it is very likely that Real Madrid could set the radar on their former stiker next summer, when Florentino Perez can take him back to the Santiago Bernabeu for a € 30 million fee.
