Lazio Ultras under investigation for telling players that Rome Derby is an “ethnic war”
Not a week goes by without a Calcio Ultra doing something reprehensible, or saying something that is frankly horrendous.
This weekend’s Rome Derby is one of the most hotly-anticipated fixtures in this rivalry in recent years, namely because fans of both sides get to see their teams fight for the top spots, Roma currently lying in second, Lazio in fourth.
Lazio’s Ultras have, however, spoiled the party for everyone by claiming that the game was an “ethnic war”, as can be seen in the video below.
This kind of terminology that is bad enough in a vacuum, and shocking when uttered by a fanbase that has a certain affinity with the far-right.
Another worrying sign is that Lazio’s players and staff were the ones who reported to the stands at their training ground in Formello, as if they had been called by their employers.
Reports indicate that the Italian authorities aren’t taking this one lying down: the Digos (the Italian General Investigations and Special Operations Division) has already decided to impound the video, as they believe that some of these embarrassing statements could result in stadium bans for those responsible.
