Italy to appoint Marcello Lippi as technical director

Marcello Lippi could soon be appointed as Italy’s technical director, La Gazzetta dello Sport has reported.

The former Juventus and Italy coach was rumoured to be edging closer to covering the same role at AC Milan, but according to the Italian paper, Lippi could make his return in the azzurri staff after two spells as Italy national team coach and the victory of the World Cup back in 2006.

Italy FA president Carlo Tavecchio wants to task him with the job of coordinating all Italy national teams in a long-term project which will not only involve the work on the pitch, but also the federation’s organizational structure.

According to the Gazzetta, Tavecchio could also ask Lippi to replace Antonio Conte and become Italy’s coach for the 3rd time in his career, though the managers in pole position for the Italy job are Gianni De Biasi, Gian Piero Gasperini, Walter Mazzarri, Vincenzo Montella, Giampiero Ventura and Eusebio Di Francesco.

The Sassuolo boss is also an option for AC Milan’s bench alongside Man City boss Manuel Pellegrini who will leave the Etihad at the end of the current campaign.
