How Torino built a European contender while turning a €27m profit

There’s little one can say about Urbano Cairo and Gianluca Petrachi, except that the two have clearly set Torino on the right path to glory.

For a club that has spent too many seasons in Serie B since it lost the 1991 UEFA Cup final to Ajax on goal difference, the Granata needed this confidence boost, one that sees them boast the best attack in Serie A, with 27 goals.

Another humbling (this time of Cagliari) has set this club on course for European qualification, potentially even a Champions League spot if things fall its way.

How on earth did this happen, especially when Torino sold both Bruno Peres and Nikola Maksimovic for 49.5 million in summer, only investing 21.7m of that?

They’ve been very clever, that’s why: loanee Leandro Castan has marshalled the defence, Adem Ljajic has bagged five goals in eight games and Iago Falque’ has returned to the heady heights we saw at Genoa. The same goes for Mirko Valdifiori, who disappeared after moving from Empoli to Napoli.

Joe Hart himself has played a huge part, both on the pitch and off it, just as Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic.

All this surely has to go down to Petrachi and Cairo's crafty stewardship: from Turinese laughing stock to returning to respectabiity, Torino are back where they belonged.
