Former Milan, Inter player: "Ultras would massacre openly homosexual players"
A former Azzurri international has cast doubt on whether openly homosexual players would be tolerated in modern football.
Francesco Coco had a good enough career to play for both Inter and AC Milan, and was even a part of Italy's catastrophic (and short!) holiday to Japan and South Korea (he would go on to total 17 caps).
A talented but very injury-prone player, Coco spoke to Corriere.it today as a part of their "Man of the Match" feature, and answered questions on homosexuality in sport, as well as a number of other topics.
"There are gay players out there, but if they came out, the ultras would massacre them".
Pertinent in their own right, these comments are even more sensitive in Italy, where Inter Milan manager was called a "fa**ot" and a "p**f* by rival coach Maurizio Sarri during a Coppa Italia game last week, sparking outrage... not entirely aimed at the Napoli manager.
Italy clearly has a long way to go. Just don't expect any of these problems to be solved soon...
