EXCLUSIVE Paletta becoming an indispensable member of Milan's defence
Ironically, in the summer in which Milan turned down a €40m Chelsea offer for Alessio Romagnoli, it is Gabriel Paletta who shined in the game, doing both the dirty work (a clearance to prevent Quagliarella from scoring when he was on the ground), carefully reading the game (waiting for a team-mate to take over marking Quagliarella so that he could press Muriel, the ball-carrier) and tutoring Romagnoli, who needs a veteran to line up alongside him.
In fact, Milan have desperately missed someone like that, capable of anticipating his team-mate’s mistakes and helping to fix any leaks just in time.
Paletta had a good season on loan to Atalanta in 2015-2016, but remained in MIlan for three reasons: beyond his own strong desire to nail down a spot, the Italo-Argentine is considered to be a key element by Vincenzo Montella, who was impressed by him in the summer and has overlooked the penalty Paletta conceded against Torino.
While youngster Gustavo Gomez isn’t yet ready and Cristian Zapata is injured, Paletta is doing a good job mentoring Alessio Romagnoli and playing alongside him.
