EXCLUSIVE: Milan change market strategy, Barzagli in January?

Among the many interesting things Sinisa Mihajlovic said in the yesterday's presser, one in particular sticks out: whilst the public focusses on the Frosinone game, the Serbian coach said that this winter's transfer plans have been a topic for discussion for two months, and that Milan already have a very clear idea of who they want to add to the side.

We have Kevin-Prince Boateng, who has already agreed to move to the San Siro until June. The Rossoneri are clearly getting rid of dead weight, too: Suso is set to move to Genoa, whilst Antonio Nocerino is unsure of his destination. Jose Mauri, Diego Lopez, the recently-red-carded Nigel de Jong and six defenders could also be shown the door.

A key to Mihajlovic's plans is his defence of Milan's summer acquisitions: Carlos Bacca, Andrea Bertolacci and Alessio Romagnoli cost nearly 80 million combined, drawing much criticism from fans and media alike.

"It's money well spent," Miha fired back "especially in a country like Italy, where it's hard to get these moves right".

"I've been in talks with the club for two months, we're not adding random players, but elements that can make a difference".

Milan's strategy is simple: instead of revolutionising the squad or adding backups, the club will spend for a few specific targets.

The midfield is particularly fragile, and the idea is to gift Mihajlovic two players, a winger (Diego Perotti) and a central midfielder. As Fabrizio Romano reported earlier, Perotti's move to the Meazza was scuppered by Suso's refusal to go the other way. The central midfield is more of a mystery, with Sinisa hinting that he would need a physical player with technique, someone who could make a difference both in defence and attack, a rather generic profile.

But what about the defence? With the likes of Cristian Zapata, Alex and Philippe Mexes nearing the end of their deals, Milan's plan is to give two players away and bring in one. But who? What about Andrea Barzagli or Joel Matip, two players whose contracts are about to run out? Other options include Martin Caceres and Daniele Rugani, who is a mirage at this stage.
