Call it a change of strategy, a U-turn, or even a bluff. Either way, Inter Milan, and especially Roberto Mancini) are going to change transfer this January.

Gone are the days of openly talking about Yaya Touré and Paulo Dybala moving to Milan, a mistake Mancini made why ended up putting too much pressure on Sporting Director Piero Ausilio and former Director General Marco Fassone.

With a big-time manager like Il Mancio openly calling for big players to join a prestigious club like Inter, it was up to them to make sure that the Beneamata acquitted herself in a dignified manner in the transfer window.

Though 11 players were finally brought in, the Nerazzurri paid the price for showing their hand before time, and for negotiating from a position of weakness: with the entire footballing community aware that Inter needed to reinforce, they ramped up the asking price. This explains why the club didn’t end up getting Eder, or why it paid so much for Geoffrey Kondogbia.

All signs point to Inter learning their lesson, however: though Roberto Mancini is as hungry as ever for elite players, he’s going to keep shtum in pressers from now on, allowing Piero Ausilio far more room for manoeuvre.

With FFP ‘s auditors also following every single Inter move with great interest, Roberto Mancini’s recent declarations looked like he was raising the white flag: “We need money for the January window, and to respect FFP regulations”.

Truth is, Inter hope to ship off the likes of Juan Jesus, Andrea Ranocchia, Fredy Guarin, Davide Santon and Danilo D’Ambrosio, and to bring someone in with the proceeds. Ausilio is, in fact, so busy that he couldn’t even be present for Samir Handanovic’s renewal, or for the presser that followed it.
