Donnarumma: ‘I’d like to follow in Buffon’s footsteps’

Following the first handful of  Serie A appearances of his as yet-young career, Milan’s promising goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma isn't wasting any time, telling Sky Sport Italy that he dreams of becoming one of the most reliable goalkeepers in world football, just like his idol Gianluigi Buffon.

Curiously, the current Juventus captain made his Serie A debut against Milan back in 1997, when he was only 17. At the time Buffon was playing for Parma and his first match as the Crociati’s senior goalkeeper ended in a scoreless draw.

“My dream is to become Italy’s starting goalkeeper, and follow in Buffon’s footsteps”, the 16-year-old shot-stopper told Sky.

“What I have to do right now is keep up the good work, remain calm and being humble. I have respect for everyone here. If you’re good to everyone and you respect your teammates, your chance will come, sooner or later.”

Donnarumma has played four games in this Serie A campaign conceding two goals, one against Sassuolo and another one against Lazio. He is also a client of Mino Raiola’s, and has kept the only two clean sheets of the Rossoneri’s season.
