De Rossi on Italy exclusion: 'Conte was right not to play me'

One of Italy's most consistent players throughout the tournament, Daniele De Rossi spoke about his team's elimination at the hands of Germany on Saturday night, coming out in support of Coach Antonio Conte for not including him in the starting lineup.

“Conte was right not to play me,” the Roma talisman told Il Corriere della Sera, “The doctors were immediately clear about my condition, and said that a recovery would be impossible. I tried anyway, I didn't feel like giving up”.

De Rossi had limped off shortly after half-time against Spain, weighed down by injury.

“I even trained with my team-mates the day before the game, but I wasn't on a par with them”.

Answering questions about his absence from the penalty shoot-out which sent the Azzurri out, De Rossi was very forthcoming:

“Let's not joke about this, let's not spread another myth. Do I look like the kind of guy who refuses to take a penalty?”

    Touche', DDR, touche'!
