Borja Valero reveals he could have played for Italy

Fiorentina’s mainstay Borja Valero talked to the Spanish website abc.es after yesterday’s 3-0 victory over Udinese that allowed the Viola to move up to second place in Serie A.

“It’s been ages since the club were in such a good position, but the title is not our target. We play the best football in Italy, even if we are not the strongest side. We need to stay calm and see what’s going on.”

“I love Florence and I love the club. The city is amazing: small comfortable and culturally rich. It rains a bit too much, but all the rest is wonderful. Fans love me too, they call me ‘the major’. My family and I are very happy here.”

“My son Alvaro is only five years old, but he goes crazy for football. He always imitates Cristiano Ronaldo. My daughter Lucia, on the other hand, has a true passion for our cat Linda.”

Despite being one of the greatest central midfielder in world football, the Spaniard could only earn one call-up with his senior national team due to the insane quality of his compatriots Xavi, Andrea Iniesta, Juan Mata, Cesc Fabregas, Santi Cazorla (just to name a few) in the middle of the pitch.

“As I’ve always said there is a lot of quality out there, but I can live with it. I am still dreaming of playing EURO 2016 with Spain, but I know it’ll be very hard.”

“Once I was asked by the Italian Football Association if I had any Italian relatives so I could have had an Italia passport too, but I told them that I only want to play for Spain.”
