Benfica block January exit of top Man Utd target

José Mourinho is desperate to sign some defence reinforcement in January as Erick Bailly, the most reliable defender at his disposal, will be leaving the Old Trafford in January to play the African Cup of Nations with his national team, not to mention that the Cameroon International has had quite a lot of injury hassles of late.

Benfica defender Victor Lindelof tops the Red Devils’ transfer shopping list, but according to a report of the Mirror, the Portuguese side are not open to sell the Sweden centre-back in the incoming transfer window as they’ve managed to qualify for the knock-out stage of the Champions League and don’t want to sell one of their stars in January.

Lindelof, however, has a release clause of € 30 million and if Manchester United are open to meet that minimum fee, they’d have no problem in signing the 22-year-old centre back without waiting for Benfica’s approval. Will Mourinho splash the cash in January or will he wait until the end of the season?
