Agent: Bologna would have done anything to get Giovinco
But how on earth did Italian football let him slip away?
Agent Andrea D'Amico chatted with Libero today, and revealed how his player ended up embracing the American game.
"Giovinco joined Montreal because he was nearing the end of his contract and there weren't the prerequisites for a renewal with Juventus. So I started looking around for options but Sebastian didn't like any of them.
"Bologna would have done anything to get Giovinco, but they were in Serie B at the time. So I thought of a chat I'd had with some MLS executives.
"They were ready to take their development plan to its third stage, and aim for players who could become icons, yet weren't reaching the end of their careers. I called my contacts in Canada, there was no need to come to an agreement, we were immediately excited."
They were right to make the move: 22 goals in 33 league games, an MLS Newcomer of the Year award and a return to Azzurri action: Giovinco has had a heck of a year.
"He's become a star. Football's future is in America: they have state-of-the-art stadiums and enthusiasm aplenty".
Giovinco made 93 Serie A appearances with Juventus, netting 14 goals. His best was likely a last-gasp winner in a key derby against Milan in a 3-2 victory in the 2012-2013 Serie A season.
