AC Milan step up pursuit for Witsel, Chinese takeover key to persuading him
Could Axel Witsel be that man? Long pursued by the Rossoneri, our sources reveal that they have returned returned to the fore after the Belgian let it known that his fourth season with Zenit Saint Petersburg will be his last.
The Russian club offered the Belgian international a new deal, which was first taken into consideration before being rejected. The 27-year-old wants to travel to France 2016 with the Red Devils... then seek a new challenge.
Thing is, his new team's plans and ambitions will be as important, if not more, than what he is set to earn. The Liege native wants to star in a team that is competing at the top. He is set to have a sit-down with Milan after the Coppa Italia final, so that he can learn where the club wants to go, and how it intends to do so.
This is where the Chinese takeover will be key, and not just because of the much-needed cash injection that the Rossoneri are set to benefit from.
Witsel won't want to join a team that looks completely stuck in the mud. The Rossoneri need to shape up in a hurry. Roma and Chelsea are also in the running.
