3 reasons why Inter lost to Lazio on Sunday evening
The former Manchester City boss, by the way, has some responsibilities for Inter’s unexpected defeat as also La Gazzetta dello Sport points out this morning.
No doubt that Felipe Melo has more than one reason to feel the most guilty for Inter’s unpredictable defeat. The Brazilian International has to be blamed for causing a penalty kick that led to Lazio’s winner in the second half as well as for the straight red card that he was shown shortly after for horror ‘neck-kick’ on Lazio’s playmaker Lucas Biglia.
The 32-year-old’s midfield partnership with Gary Medel is another reason why Inter lost to Lazio. The duo missed 23 passes throughout the game, underlining one more time that the Nerazzurri need more quality in the middle of the pitch and that a playmaker should be the club’s priority in the January transfer window.
Croatia International Marcelo Brozovic could have provided enhanced touches if Roberto Mancini would have start him instead of Felipe Melo or Gary Medel. The 23-year-old is in terrific form as he netted two goals in just as much games before the Lazio tie, not to mansion that he is probably the player with the best quality skills in Inter’s midfield.
Adem Ljiajic is another player who was expected to be into the starting IX against Lazio, though Mancini preferred to line-up Jonathan Biabiany, Stevan Jovetic and Ivan Perisic behind the sole Mauro Icardi up-front.
‘I’d do the same things again’ Mancini answered the journalists when he was asked to give explanation for Inter’s starting XI after the game, adding that they "can’t lose games committing stupid mistakes”, which can be also read as a way to pin the blame for Inter's defeat only on Felipe Melo.
