Exclusive: Arsenal and Man Utd worried as Napoli want to cancel release clause of star striker

Arsenal and Manchester United are being linked with welcoming the services of Napoli star Dries Mertens in the summer. Both Premier League giants tried to sign him in the previous transfer campaign but failed to reach an agreement with Napoli.

The Serie A giants agreed the player’s contract extension in the summer with the Belgian who managed to have a release clause included in his deal.

The release clause of Mertens will be activated from next summer. The 30-year-old will be available for € 28 million if the Seire A giants fail to win the Serie A title or € 33 million if the azzurri won the title this season.

Napoli, however, hope Mertens will sign another contract extension at the end of the season and hope they will manage to cancel his release clause.

Sources have told calciomercato.com that Napoli will offer Mertens a new € 4 million-a-year deal, offering him to cancel his release clause. Of course, if Napoli win the league it would be easier for the partenopei to persuade their star to extend his stay at the club and snubs moves to the Premier League.
