Allegri was right: Juventus' midfield needs one-two signings to regain its bite

Juve’s collapse in Genoa yesterday has been a big wake-up call, that’s for sure.

Those who have long been critical of how Massimiliano Allegri’s team has played seem to have been proved right: there is something wrong with this Juventus team, enough to go 3-0 down at half-time to Genoa, and put up a meek response thereafter.

Among the numerous things that went wrong yesterday, one in particular is striking: there is no muscle in midfield, despite an abundance of players there. As talented as he is, Miralem Pjanic is not Paul Pogba: a great playmaker always on the lookout for the killer ball, the Bosnian isn’t the dynamic runner Pogba is.

The absence of Arturo Vidal is also striking. In truth, Juventus need to buy one, potentially two players in the middle of the park, something Coach Allegri has actually been advocating since the summer.

Mario Lemina is struggling to keep fit, as are the recovering Rolando Mandragora and Kwadwo Asamoah. Beyond that, we're down to players like Stefano Sturaro.

Who could Juventus go for? How about that Tomas Rincon that is being written so much about? The Venezuelan international has all the steel needed to play the position. The only question is whether he is considered more important than some of the overseas players the Bianconeri like.
